Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about visual inspection defect test kits, surrogate solutions, automated inspection support, and regulatory compliance.

Defect Test Kits

What is a visual inspection defect test kit?

A visual inspection defect test kit is a controlled set of pharmaceutical containers with known challenge attributes. Depending on its intended use, a set may support training, qualification, comparative studies, probability-of-detection work, or inspection-system development. The configuration and documentation should be defined in an approved project specification or protocol.

What types of defects can a test kit include?

A project may include visible particulate, container, closure, fill, functional, or cosmetic attributes. The approved defect taxonomy, risk classification, intended use, and ability to create stable representative standards determine the final scope.

What container formats do you support?

YB Inspection develops project-specific sets for vials, prefilled syringes, cartridges, ampoules, IV bags, bottles, and other pharmaceutical presentations, subject to feasibility and an agreed specification.

How long does a defect test kit remain suitable for use?

There is no universal lifetime. Suitability depends on the defect, product or surrogate, container, storage, handling, frequency of use, and the site's approved inspection, verification, replacement, and retirement controls.

What documentation can accompany a test kit?

Project documentation can define standard identity, defect type, location, characterization data, status, handling, storage, and lifecycle records. The exact package is agreed during project scoping; a test kit does not by itself establish regulatory compliance or audit readiness.

Surrogate Solutions

What is a surrogate solution and when may one be useful?

A surrogate is a representative formulation considered when actual product is unavailable, hazardous, high value, supply constrained, or otherwise unsuitable for selected development or qualification work. Relevant properties, acceptance criteria, and limitations should be defined for the intended use.

Which surrogate properties may matter?

Properties may include refractive index, color, clarity or opalescence, density, viscosity, interfacial behavior, particle motion, and compatibility with the container and study conditions. Not every property is equally important for every product, defect, package, or inspection method.

How long does surrogate development take?

Timing depends on sample availability, target properties, analytical needs, material compatibility, iteration, documentation, quantity, and shipping. A project-specific timeline is provided after technical review.

AVI & SAVI

What is the difference between AVI and SAVI?

Automated visual inspection uses machine vision to make inspection decisions. Semi-automated visual inspection automates selected handling or presentation steps while trained people make the inspection decision. Capability and throughput are equipment-, product-, container-, and method-specific.

Do you work with specific inspection equipment manufacturers?

Projects can be scoped around the customer's installed manual, semi-automated, or automated platform. Equipment manufacturer, model, station configuration, container handling, inspection regions, software access, and data needs should be confirmed before compatibility or support scope is promised.

What does AVI recipe development involve?

Recipe development may address container handling, spin or motion, lighting, camera and station settings, masks, algorithms, reject thresholds, representative challenge units, repeatability, false-reject behavior, and approved decision rules. The final recipe and acceptance criteria remain equipment-, product-, and site-specific.

Regulatory & Compliance

What is a Knapp study?

Knapp-style comparative inspection is an industry methodology used to compare inspection performance against a defined reference classification or detection-frequency baseline. It is not one universal regulatory protocol; study design, metrics, and acceptance criteria must be justified and approved for the intended use.

What does USP <790> address?

USP <790> is a compendial general chapter addressing visible particulates in injections and compendial acceptance testing. Broader expectations for routine inspection, inspector qualification, methods, defect handling, and lifecycle controls come from applicable GMP requirements, product requirements, and supporting guidance. Current official texts should be consulted directly.

How does EU GMP Annex 1 address visual inspection?

EU GMP Annex 1 paragraphs 8.30–8.33 address individual inspection of filled containers, defect classification, investigation, trend analysis, inspector qualification, and validation of automated methods within the sterile manufacturing quality system.

What is probability of detection?

Probability of detection describes the likelihood that a defined defect will be detected under specified product, container, inspection, and observer or equipment conditions. It is a capability measure, not proof that every defect is always detected.

Working With YB Inspection

Where are YB Inspection products made?

YB Inspection states that its test-kit products are manufactured in the United States and that the business is based in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina. Project-specific manufacturing and documentation details should be confirmed in the quotation and quality agreement.

How do I start a project?

Submit the quote form with the container, fill volume, product appearance or viscosity, intended inspection method, defect families, quantity, documentation needs, and timeline. YB Inspection can then evaluate feasibility and define the proposed scope.

Can consulting be purchased without a test kit?

Yes. Consulting may be scoped independently for program design, training, qualification, validation, investigation, trending, inspection readiness, or related technical support.

Which organizations may be a fit for YB Inspection support?

YB Inspection supports pharmaceutical and biotechnology teams evaluating visual inspection test sets, surrogate solutions, training and qualification, inspection-system development, or technical consulting. Feasibility and scope depend on the product, package, process, market, intended use, and available evidence.
